How to Pair 3M Worktunes and Troubleshoot Their Bluetooth Connection

How to pair 3M Worktunes

The purpose of this article is to help you out if you encounter issues when pairing 3M Worktunes with your phone or switching between different devices. I have been asked a few times, so I want to share how I do it.

We will cover pairing your Worktunes, resetting Worktunes, and unpairing them from your phone.

As the time of this writing, the two most popular 3M Worktunes are:

  • Worktunes Connect (Bluetooth, no radio, to the left in the image above)
  • Worktunes Connect+AM/FM (Bluetooth & AM/FM radio), also known as Worktunes Wireless Hearing Protector with Bluetooth

We will be covering both models separately because pairing and switching between different phones & tablets works differently.

If you need help on how to find your Worktunes in your phone’s Bluetooth list, please see the Addendum at the end of this post.

Otherwise, please make sure you are following the section for your model.

Many issues arise from doing a web search and following the instructions for the wrong model!

For more information on Worktunes and other Bluetooth hearing protection, please check my comparative review of Bluetooth earmuffs..

Let’s first look at the model without radio.

Pairing Worktunes Connect (Bluetooth, no radio)

Pairing-Worktunes-Connect

This model only has a single control button and a voice assistant guiding you through the pairing process. I recommend putting them on, so you can hear the voice assistant.

  1. Long press the control button to turn on your Worktunes Connect.

Voice assistant response: Power On, battery high, short melody.

  1. Double press the control button (press twice in a rapid succession) to enter Bluetooth pairing mode.

Voice assistant: Bluetooth Pairing on.

  1. Tap the entry Worktunes Connect in your phone’s Bluetooth device list to connect.

(See the addendum at the end of this post if you need more info on where to find Worktunes Connect on your phone.)

Voice assistant: Bluetooth Connected.

You are ready to go.

Notes:

  • This procedure should work whether you are pairing with a particular phone for the first time or are trying to reconnect to a previously paired phone.
  • It should also work if you are currently connected to one phone and want to connect to a different one.
  • When you turn on your Worktunes Connect the next time, they automatically attempt to reconnect to your most recently connected phone. If you don’t hear Bluetooth Connected, check that your phone’s Bluetooth is actually switched on. For further troubleshooting see the section below.

Troubleshooting and resetting the Bluetooth connection of your Worktunes Connect (Bluetooth, no radio)

I recommend you reset your Worktunes Connect and unpair them (=delete them) from your phone.

  1. Unpair the Worktunes Connect from your phone.
  2. Reset your Worktunes Connect.
  3. Start over with the pairing procedure.

Note: If you reset your Worktunes but skip unpairing, iPhones and iPads in particular may not be able to re-connect and you get the message “Connection Unsuccessful.”

Pairing Worktunes Connect+AM/FM (Bluetooth & AM/FM radio), aka Worktunes Wireless

Pairing-Worktunes-Connect-AM-FM

The 3M Worktunes Connect+AM/FM have a voice assistant guiding you through the pairing process, so it is best to wear them while pairing.

If this is the first time you are pairing your Worktunes, skip right to procedure (A).

Important note if this is not the first time you are pairing your Worktunes:

Unlike the Worktunes Connect without radio, where you can disconnect from a phone using the earmuffs, the Worktunes Connect+AM/FM have to be disconnected using the currently connected phone before you can pair them to a different phone.

So if, after turning on your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM, you hear the voice assistant saying Bluetooth Connected, you have to use the phone (to which the earmuffs are currently connected) and either disconnect or switch off the phone’s Bluetooth.

Skip right to procedure (B) below for the detailed steps.

Disconnecting cannot be done from the earmuffs and only after disconnecting can you enter pairing mode and pair your Worktunes to a different phone.

(A) Here is how you pair your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM with a phone

  1. Long press the volume knob to turn on your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM.

Voice assistant response: Power On, FM, 87.5

Note: If voice assistant says: Bluetooth connected, use procedure (B) below from step 2.

  1. Press the Source button twice to select Bluetooth

Voice assistant: Bluetooth.

  1. Long press the Func button until you hear a tone signal

Voice assistant: Bluetooth pairing on.

  1. Tap the entry Worktunes Connect+AM/FM in your phone’s Bluetooth device list to connect.

Voice assistant: Bluetooth Connected.
(See the addendum at the end of this post if you need more info on how to access your phone’s Bluetooth device list.)

You are ready to go.

(B) How to pair your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM with a different phone if they are currently connected to a phone

This applies if you want to switch from one phone to another and after turning on your Worktunes, voice assistant says: Bluetooth Connected.

  1. Long press the volume knob to turn on your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM.

Voice assistant response: Power On, FM, 87.5, Bluetooth Connected

  1. Press the Source button twice to select Bluetooth

Voice assistant: Bluetooth.

  1. Disconnect your Worktunes using the phone they are currently connected to.
    • Android: Tap the the entry to disconnectAndroid Worktunes-Connect-AM-FM-Disconnect
    • iOS: Tap i followed by DisconnectiOS Worktunes-Connect-AM-FM-Disconnect-1
      iOS Worktunes-Connect-AM-FM-Disconnect-2

Voice assistant response: Connecting Bluetooth.

  1. Long press the Func button until you hear a tone signal

Voice assistant: Bluetooth pairing on.

  1. Tap the entry Worktunes Connect+AM/FM in your new phone’s Bluetooth device list to connect.

(See the addendum at the end of this post if you need more info on how to access your phone’s Bluetooth device list.)

Voice assistant: Bluetooth Connected.

Notes:

  • When you turn on your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM the next time, they automatically attempt to reconnect to your most recently connected phone. If you don’t hear Bluetooth Connected, check that your phone’s Bluetooth is actually switched on. For further troubleshooting see the section below.

Troubleshooting and resetting the Bluetooth connection of your Worktunes Connect+AM/FM

According to 3M, the Worktunes Connect+AM/FM can be reset by long-pressing the Source-button together with the volume-knob.
Indeed, the voice assistant responds with: Default Settings.

However, for this Worktunes model the reset does not delete the memory for the most recently paired phone, i.e., the earmuffs will still attempt to connect.

(I have tried this on several units with the same result.)

Fortunately, we can easily solve this issue by using our phone.

Here is my recommended procedure for troubleshooting the Bluetooth connection for the Worktunes Connect+AM/FM

  1. Delete (forget) the Worktunes Connect+AM/FM entry from your phone (Android: Unpair; iOS: Forget this Device)

(If you have the Worktunes Connect+AM/FM entry in several phones, delete if from all of them.)

This makes it impossible for the Worktunes to connect and allows you to pair them again.

  1. Start over with the pairing procedure (A) described above.

For Android

  1. Long-press the Bluetooth symbol to see the list of paired Bluetooth devices.Android-Bluetooth-List
  2. Tap the cog wheel.Android Worktunes-Connect--AM-FM-Unpair-1
  3. Tap Unpair.Android Worktunes-Connect--AM-FM-Unpair-2

  1. Goto Settings->Bluetooth.
  2. Find the entry Worktunes Connect+AM/FM (under My Devices) and tap the information icon.iOS Worktunes-Connect--AM-FM-Unpair-1
  3. Tap Forget this Device.iOS Worktunes-Connect--AM-FM-Unpair-2

Result: the Worktunes entry is gone.

Addendum: Where do you find Worktunes Connect / Worktunes+AM/FM on your phone?

After you have entered Bluetooth pairing mode on your Worktunes Connect or Worktunes Connect+AM/FM, you should find them under Available devices (Android) or Other devices (iPhone&iPad) if this is the first time you are connecting your earmuffs to a particular phone.

If Worktunes have already been paired with your phone, they appear under My Devices.

Android (screenshots from a Samsung Galaxy):

Long-press the Bluetooth symbol to see the list of Bluetooth devices

If you have not already paired your Worktunes Connect with your phone, they appear under Available Devices:

  1. Sorry my last comment did not come through properly.
Thank you very much for your information on setting up my Worktunes; it was very much appreciated. I had almost given up on my headset.

  2. YEAAAAAA! It worked. I was having to keep my old disabled iphone around and use with wifi to use bluetooth and worktunes headphones. Now my new phone works. I’m so happy. I want to shout it from someplace very high.

    • Hi Frank,

I assume you are looking for guidance for the Worktunes Connect + AM/FM.
(The Worktunes Connect without radio can always be put into pairing mode/reset, even when there is an active connection.)

If your old iPhone is not in connection range, there shouldn’t be a problem.
(You might only run into trouble if you have sold the phone to your neighbor.)

With the most recently paired phone out of range, Worktunes can’t successfully auto-connect and you can enter pairing mode.

(It’s a successful auto connect that prevents the muffs from going into pairing mode, not the entry in the Bluetooth list of one or more phones.)

Just follow the steps outlined under procedure (A) to pair the Worktunes to a new device.
      All the best.

  4. I no longer have have the I-phone that my Worktunes were paired to. I want to pair it with my I-phone 11. How do I do this if I can’t forget it from my old phone? “Worktunes” will not appear on my phones Bluetooth connect menu.

    • Hello Edward,

you don’t need to delete anything from your old phone if you don’t have it anymore.
That would only be necessary if your phone was in range and auto-connecting to your Worktunes. You didn’t mention which model you have.
In any case, go through the steps in this article for entering pairing mode (for the model that looks like yours in the photo) and your Worktunes should show up in your Bluetooth list.
      All the best.
